The
veteran keeper has signed a one-year deal with Chelsea after leaving Fulham on a free last
month.
The 40
year-old said: “It’s a phenomenal club —
one of the biggest and best clubs in the world.
“It’s an honour to sign for
Chelsea. I didn’t take much convincing to come here.
“I’ve spoken to the manager
and it was very easy to make the decision that Chelsea was the right club for
me.
“The size and ambition of
the club and the opportunities at the club ticked all the boxes. It was an
amazing opportunity to join a fantastic club.”
Schwarzer
became the first overseas player to make 500 Premier League appearances and his
signing seems to have solved Chelsea’s goalkeeping dilemma.
The Blues
were looking for a back-up to No 1 Petr Cech following the release of Ross
Turnbull and Hilario.
This
week they had two formal offers for Norwich stopper John Ruddy rejected.
But in
a statement Chelsea said they were ‘delighted’ to have landed a player capped
108 times by the Aussies.
The
club added: “He brings with him a wealth of experience after more than 15 years
in England with Bradford, Middlesbrough and Fulham.”
The
deal takes Schwarzer through to next summer’s World Cup in Brazil, for which
Australia have already qualified.
Schwarzer
joined Bradford in 1996. He then signed for Middlesbrough and played more than
400 times in 11 years.
Highlights
included lifting the League Cup in 2003 and playing in the 2006 UEFA Cup final.
He also appeared 220 times for Fulham.
